Tropical Tree Planting -
A
significant part of our tree planting project now extends to planting trees where forests
cover 6–8% of the global land area. The days are long with 12 hours of sunshine 365 days
a year, sequester 40–50% of the worlds Carbon and will grow to maturity in 40 to 50
years. This is half the time it takes for the trees we plant in the UK.

The
Rainforests of the World produce 40% of the earth's Oxygen and from
a medics view about 1/4 of all the medicines we use come from rainforest plants. Curare
comes from a tropical vine and is used as an anaesthetic to relax muscles during surgery.
Quinine, from the cinchona tree is used to treat Malaria. And a person with Lymphocyte
Leukaemia has a 99% chance that the disease will go into remission because of the Rosy
Periwinkle.
Tree
planting in the Tropics has been marred with logistical, management, planting and media
problems. The British band, Coldplay sponsored trees which through poor management
resulted in catastrophic failure and a grove of dead mango trees. As an established
horticultural UK nursery based business, the CFOP prides itself on not only working with
the best from within our industry in the UK and Europe, but more importantly working and
learning with our ecologists, conservationists, forestry and nursery colleagues to plant
trees into the rainforests around the equator between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn
through Central and South America to Asia, Africa, Australia and Pacific Islands.
We’ve
concentrated our efforts into two key regions. Firstly Central and South America, this
Amazonian region is the biggest area forming more than half of the worlds total rainforest
area. Secondly the African rainforests mainly on the Congo River basin, an area of such a
magnitude that it’s hard to put it into context.
By
bringing together this tree planting venture and our wealth of experience, we are working
to reverse the trend of deforestation. Thus creating sustainable agro-forestry plantations
and restoring the land into a stabilised means of life. This will provide food and income
to families and communities.
There
are several hundred species to be found growing in tropical rainforests. And these prove
to be a really educational for us here in the UK. So the trees we are planting on your
behalf with our tropical rainforest partners, will over time, sequester the highest
amounts of CO2. And
it will also include high value timber such as Mahogany, Acacia, Eucalyptus, Teak and
Leacaena. For fruit, they’ll be Mandarin, Breadnut, and others you may be familiar with
are Kauri, Purple Heart, Roble, Red Cedar, Oak, Walnut, Mango, Rubber, Cherry, Cocobola,
Trebol, Laurel, Fig, Idigbo, Lapacho, Palm, Banana, Durian, Lemon, Pine, Teak, Lacebark,
Nargusta, Coachwood, Sassafras, Rosewood, Beech, Tambran and Bocote.
2011
was the International Year of Forests and in order
to maximise our efforts we have some excellent onging sponsorship tree planting options.
Our
target is to plant 1.0 million tropical forestry trees annually and being partnered with
international nurserymen and foresters in the Rainforest Reforestation Program, we are
working in the areas where tree planting is most needed. And as Money doesn’t grow on
trees it grows with trees through our "Ethical Investments Plan".
