International
environmental debates and the UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) are moving away
from carbon neutrality and offsetting to an increased focus on sustainability and
biodiversity? Whereby conserving
our ecosystem and sustainably managing biodiversity we redress the issues of climate
change.
Eurostar
Abandon Carbon Offsetting Eurostar
has announced the end of carbon offsetting and carbon neutral journeys. As it launched the
second phase of its green Tread Lightly programme, the train operator said research found
many people did not understand the concept of carbon offsetting, while the environmental
debate has become increasingly focused on sustainability.

With
our World-wide tree placement scheme we would have preferred to see a World-wide or
European Woodland Carbon Code
as at some point there will inevitably be an International or European code that we will
have to follow through on, but for today as commercial tree growers and foresters we
welcome the news that the UK Forestry Commission has published guidelines for schemes that
plant trees in order to absorb carbon which addresses some of the criticisms levelled at
carbon offsetting projects as well as clarity and transparency to potential investors
about just what their money should buy them".

Though
organisations such as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) argue that
woodlands are about more than just being carbon sinks and MPs have said it was hard to
verify claims of carbon uptake due to a lack of meaningful regulations.

reverse the deterioration in our hedgerows the CFOP & Landscape-UK has launched a
Hedge Fund which runs for the duration of the 2011-2020 United
Nations Decade on Biodiversity that will see 2020 miles of new hedges planted. Every Mt
planted generates a £1 investment into UK School and Community Clean Energy Projects
which equates out to £1609.35 per mile of hedgerow planted and some £3.3m of investment
by 2020.

Christmas
is over, the days are getting longer, and people are getting back into the swing.
Including us at the CFOP Landscape-UK! We are again lifting trees, despatching plant
protection and planting across the UK.
The big freeze put a stop to things for a couple of weeks; conditions were as hard as
anyone at the CFOP can remember, and several of us go back a long way. The frozen ground
conditions spoilt the National Tree Week Planting and the ice on Grand Union Canal
surrounding our offices supported many walkers for weeks now, put a complete stop to
things.
Let's hope January brings some respite from the extreme weather, for everybody.
We have got lots of great trees in stock, in all sizes from whips to semi-mature
specimens. Our range includes native hedging material, ornamental garden and amenity
trees, evergreens, fruit trees, multi-stems, advanced hedging stock and more. There are
some really good varieties for year round and winter interest, with attractive bark,
colourful stems and striking early flowers.
Weve managed to catch up with the forestry planting backlog with our planting teams back
in full swing across the UK so if your Thinking Green "why not turn your thoughts into action"

2010: The Big Tree Plant - Getting the UK planting trees!

The
CFOP are supporting the Tree Council members, who are
committed to a brand new drive to get the UK planting trees!
The
Big Tree Plant is a new national tree planting campaign being delivered by civil society
partners and conservation organisations working with the Department for Environment, Food
and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Forestry
Commission.
The
overall aim of The Big Tree Plant is to increase the number of trees being planted in
Englands towns, cities and neighbourhoods whilst supporting the building of the Big
Society by encouraging citizens to take responsibility for establishing, protecting and
enhancing green spaces in their local area.
The
Big Tree Plant aims to improve the quality of life of those living in England towns,
cities and residential areas by making neighbourhoods more attractive, healthy places to
live. Trees can make streets and public places come to life, by attracting wildlife,
changing colours throughout the seasons and creating shade and shelter. They shield houses
from traffic noise, can help save energy, reduce the risk of flooding and also help fight
the effects of air pollution and climate change.
To
get involved, visit The Big Tree Plant website
